The school is located on the Calder Highway, a main arterial highway linking Bendigo to Melbourne.

St Monica's is situated in the Parish of St Mary's, Golden Square.

Records show that a school building made of vertical slab walls and a bark roof was built on the present site for Dr. Henry Bachaus, the pioneer priest of the Bendigo Goldfields in 1860. Pupils attended under the care of Miss Wall 1859-1860.

The original church of St. Monica was built in 1864 and used as a church school. To this was added, in 1920, two wooden classrooms and staff facilities. It was in 1920 that the Sisters of Mercy took over the administration of St. Monica's School.

Over the years the school has expanded to encompass twelve well equiped classrooms, a comprehensive library and administration area. St. Monica's is set in attractive, landscaped grounds which provide large open play areas for students.
